Garbage Collection Every Week
All material must fit in the brown (garbage) cart. Automated trucks cannot pick up any material that is next to the cart. Please put the garbage cart out the night before your collection day or by 6:00am the morning of pickup.
Please place in the Brown Garbage Cart:
- Mixed trash
- Plastic wrap & bags
- Broken toys
- Ceramics
- Light bulbs
- Bagged garbage & food waste
- Styrofoam & other loose trash
Do not put the following items in the garbage:
- Yard waste
- Recyclables
- Household hazardous waste
- Cardboard boxes
- Construction materials
- Electronics
Please put bagged trash in the brown cart. Bags that are tied keep the carts clean. Local clean sweep programs may offer alternative options for disposal of fluorescent light bulbs, household hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals & electronics.
Cart Placement
The arrows on the lid of the cart must point to the street
Handles and wheels should face away from the street
- The garbage cart should be placed within 2 ft. of the street on one side of the driveway
- The recycle cart should be placed within 2 ft. of the street on the other side of the driveway
- Please keep 6 ft. of clearance between the carts and other objects, especially mailboxes and vehicles
Recycle Collection Every Other Week
Loose recycling must fit in the green recycle cart. Automated trucks cannot pick up any material that is next to the cart. Please put the recycle cart out the night before your collection day or by 6:00am the morning of pickup. If your green recycle cart is out on the wrong week it cannot be collected.
Please place the following items in the Green Recycle Cart:
MIXED CONTAINERS
- Aluminum cans & clean aluminum foil
- Tin cans, steel cans, aerosol cans, empty/dried paint cans
- Glass bottles & jars
- #1-7 plastic
- Milk cartons, juice boxes, soup cartons
MIXED PAPER
- Newspaper, magazines, books, mail, school/office paper
- Brown corrugated cardboard (flattened)
- Gray chipboard (cereal & shoe boxes)
- Brown paper bags
SHREDDED PAPER
- Please put in a secured clear plastic bag, and place in the GREEN cart. NO other recycling should be placed in bags.
Do not put the following items in the green cart:
- Styrofoam
- Yard waste
- Trash
- Household hazardous waste
- Construction materials
- Electronics
- Clothing

Bulk Collections Every other Month
Acceptable Bulk Items:
- Furniture, Appliances, Large metal items
- Carpeting (no wider than 4ft and rolled)
- Extra garbage bags or garbage in personal cans
- Tires (2 per home per month – 8 per year)
- Cardboard (flattened & empty)
- Drain oil & antifreeze (sealed in 1-5 gallon containers)
- Paper & other recyclables should be in clear plastic bags
- Humidifiers/De-humidifiers, Water Softeners
- Air Conditioners
Unacceptable Bulk Items:
- Yard waste
- Electronics
- Hazardous materials
- Liquid paint
- Loose bulk construction materials
All items for bulk pick up should be placed within 2 feet of curbside and 6 feet from the garbage/recycling containers.
Collection Day:
The Village of Mukwonago is serviced on Wednesday.
Collection Schedule:
The garbage (brown cart) is emptied on a weekly basis.
The recycling (green cart) is emptied every other week.
Bulk Collection:
Large items, extra cans or bags can be taken with the bulk collections. Bulk will be collected on the first Wednesday every other month. Bulk collection dates are listed in the collection schedule.
Yard Waste Collection:
Yard waste collection begins on Thursday and continues until every road has been collected. Each road is collected only once.
- Please place yard waste and brush at the curb by 6:00 a.m.
- Place items within 6 feet of the road if possible.
- Do not put out non-compostable materials for yard waste pickup.
- Yard waste must be placed in compostable paper bags or clear plastic bags.
- Brush must be in bundles weighing no more than 50 lbs and in lengths of no more than 4 feet.
- Materials that exceed the weight or length limit will not be collected.
- There is a 30 bag limit per stop.
