Garbage Collection Every Week

Please place the following in the garbage cart (black lid):

  • Mixed trash
  • Plastic wrap & bags
  • Broken toys
  • Ceramics
  • Light bulbs
  • Bagged garbage & food waste
  • Styrofoam & other loose trash

Do not put the following items in the garbage:

  • Yard waste
  • Recyclables
  • Household hazardous waste
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Construction materials

Local clean sweep programs may offer alternative options for disposal of fluorescent light bulbs, household hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals & electronics.

Recycle collection Every week

Please place the following in the recycle cart (gray lid):

Mix it all together:

Johns Disposal Service provides single stream recycling.  All recyclable material can be mixed together.  Johns Disposal’s recycle process system sorts all recyclable material.

Containers:

  • Clean aluminum foil
  • Tin cans, steel cans, aerosol cans, dried paint cans
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • #1-7 plastic bottles or jugs with a twist top
  • Cartons (juice boxes, milk cartons)

Mixed Paper:

  • Newspaper, magazines, books, mail, school/office paper
  • Brown corrugated cardboard
  • Gray chipboard (cereal & shoe boxes)
  • Brown paper bags

Shredded Paper:

  • Please put in a clear plastic bag

Please do not place the following in your Recycling cart:

  • Plastic bags & styrofoam of any kind
  • Toys
  • Yard waste
  • Other plastic
  • Trash
  • Household hazardous waste
  • Construction materials
  • Electronics

 Cart Placement:

  • The arrows on the lid of the cart must point to the street.
  • Handles and wheels should face away from the street.
  • The garbage cart should be placed within 2 ft. of the street on one side of the driveway.
  • The recycle cart should be placed withing 2 ft. of the street on the other side of the driveway.
  • Please keep 6 ft. of clearance between other objects, especially mailboxes and vehicles.

Important Information:

  •  Please place garbage/recycling carts at the curb the night before service or by 6AM on your day of service.
  • The recycle cart is for “single stream” recycling.  All recycle items are to be placed loose in the recycle cart, no sorting or bagging is necessary.
  • Bulk pick up is monthly on the first week of service each month.
  • Johns Disposal will provide 1 free electronic recycling and document shredding drop off per year for Salem residents.  Drop off event date to be determined.

Bulk Collections

This service is for items that do not fit inside the carts.  This will be the first week of every month.

Acceptable Bulk Items:

  • Furniture
  • Carpeting (no wider than 4ft and rolled)
  • Extra garbage bags or garbage in personal cans
  • Large metal items
  • Cardboard (flattened & empty)
  • Appliances
  • Tires (2 per home per month – 8 per year)
  • Drain oil & antifreeze (sealed in 1-5 gallon containers)
  • Paper & other recyclables should be in clear plastic bags
  • Humidifiers/De-humidifiers, Water Softeners
  • Air conditioners

Unacceptable Bulk Items:

  • Yard Waste
  • Electronics
  • Hazardous materials
  • Liquid paint
  • Loose bulk construction materials

All items for bulk pickup should be placed within 2 ft of curbside and 6 ft from the garbage/recycling containers.

Wisconsin E-Cycle:

Johns Disposal is a registered collector of electronics for the state of Wisconsin.  Johns Disposal will provide 1 free electronic drop off for all Salem residents.  Dates to be determined.  Johns can also pick up your electronics year round for a fee.  Please call Johns Disposal to make arrangements.
